This year, the Timeless
Moments survey has shed new light on how mothers and daughters communicate about osteoporosis. When asked about mothers’ health, surveyed daughters revealed that their greatest fear is the loss of their mothers’ independence, which is potentially one of the most significant consequences of undiagnosed osteoporosis. In fact, fractures and their potentially life-threatening consequences are the major cause of disability and loss of independence in osteoporosis patients. Despite this, most daughters surveyed are not talking to their mothers about this serious condition.
Loss of independence (43%), reduced quality of life (40%) and becoming unable to lead an active life (40%) are the most frequently cited daughters’ concerns when thinking about their mothers growing older. However, only 7% of daughters discuss osteoporosis with their mothers, though health was the most frequently discussed topic between mothers and daughters (90%) on a regular basis.
Dialogue about osteoporosis is one of the foundations of the Timeless Women campaign launched at World Osteoporosis Day 2008 with ambassador and iconic James Bond actress Ursula Andress. The campaign shatters the traditional image of women with osteoporosis as ‘frail and fragile’ and encourages women to educate themselves about osteoporosis and the need to treat it, ultimately empowering themselves to enjoy an active and independent lifestyle.
In order to continue fostering discussion about osteoporosis among daughters and their mothers, this year the Timeless Women campaign is launching the Timeless Moments Gallery to encourage all mothers and daughters to treasure the special moments they enjoy together and to share these with other Timeless Women via this site. Think of those special moments in your life which you know will remain forever in your memory. The moments which you replay in your mind as though they happened yesterday; birthdays, anniversaries, the arrival of a new child or grandchild, or simply everyday interactions with friends and family which touched you in a special way. Life is made of these Timeless Moments.
We strongly believe that osteoporosis should not be a barrier to creating new Timeless Moments; women with osteoporosis are now living their life to the fullest, thanks to advances in the way osteoporosis is managed and treated. If you are a mother with osteoporosis or the daughter of a mum with osteoporosis, we would like you to share your own special Timeless Moments which you have experienced together. This will be shown in the Timeless
Moments Gallery which Mothers and Daughters worldwide can view.
