About OsteoporosisActions to Support Osteoporosis Medication
The following can have an important role in osteoporosis prevention and treatment.
-
Calcium and vitamin D

Calcium is an essential mineral for bones, and vitamin D is essential for good calcium absorption. Both of these supplements are often prescribed by doctors to ensure that bones will have enough calcium to be healthy and more resistant to fractures. Calcium is also very important for many other body and organ functions. Not getting enough calcium can lead to a condition called hypocalcaemia. Hypocalcaemia can cause muscle spasms, depression, numbness and tingling in the hands, feet or around the mouth and when too low, seizures.Calcium and vitamin D are normally prescribed as supplements with specific osteoporosis treatment therapies. They can, and should, also be taken before osteoporosis is diagnosed as a preventative measure if calcium and vitamin D levels are not already high enough in the body. Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional about the appropriate daily allowance of calcium and vitamin D for you.

Regular physical activity e.g. aerobic weight-bearing and resistance exercise (see How to Prevent and Manage Osteoporosis)
Weight-bearing and resistance exercise can help build the strength of bones, reducing the risk of fractures. -
Fracture prevention methods
Taking measures to prevent falls (and ultimately fractures) is often recommended. These should complement your lifestyle rather than hinder it. To find out more look at the How to Prevent and Manage Osteoporosis section for more information.
